Whether you  manage our own blog or have someone manage it for you, broken links happen. Over time, posts and pages are moved or deleted; sites are taken down. Thus, leading to broken links.

When you are building a blog to attract and retain loyal readers, the last thing you want to do is to annoy them with links that lead to a 404 Error-Not Found page.

Checking links by hand, especially if you have a lot of posts, can be tedious and time consuming. Believe me, there is enough to do in a day without checking posts for broken links.

Broken links can also affect your page ranking in Google. Recently, I found a plug-in that will solve this problem:

Enter the Broken Link Checker

  • Detects  links that don’t work

It detected a link to  images that had been removed on another blog.

  • Checks links in posts, comments, and blogroll.

A reader had mis-typed his URL. Broken link checker notified me and I was able to correct it.

  • Checks new posts and entries immediately.

As I was writing this post and installing the links, the plug-in was essential in “getting it right”

  • Notifies you on the Dashboard if problems are found.

This feature is very  convenient, as I made a habit of looking at my Dashboard first

  • Lets you edit all instances of a specific link at once.

Talk about a time saver! Once I corrected a broken link in “comments”, it corrected that link in other places on my blog.

  • Gives you a list of all the links posted on your site.

I can see all of the links in my blog at a glance. Nice.

  • Allows you to apply CSS styles to broken or removed links.

I don’t create CSS styles  so I couldn’t give you a review of  this feature but I’m sure this added capability will make developers happy!
