When I started learning the ways of internet marketing, I was confused. No, your other left foot! But since getting Alex Jeffreys as a mentor, the fog is beginning to lift. Oh don’t get me wrong, there’s still fog but now I’m starting to see the ground. Time will pass before you see the clouds.

Hey, New York’s a coastal town. Gotta get the imagery from somewhere right?

So anyway,  now that I am an internet marketing student, I see marketing in EVERYTHING. I’m starting to consciously or unconsciously attach product to things like AIR: air conditioning, airplanes, kites, bubbles, yes that’s right bubbles.  Street vendors are great teachers. The marketing I get from the internet is huge. Now, I get on average 200 e-mails a day. If I received this kind of volume at home, my mail carrier would a real friendly manner give me the what’s what and advise me to get a P.O. box. It’s insane.

Lately, I’ve been busy list building, neglecting  the “social end” – blog hopping, forum commenting – in other words, building relationships. I wasn’t writing either. I was getting all caught up in “what should I write about? I don’t know anything about internet marketing, etc. etc. I was just beating myself over the head until…

I saw a marketer’s blog with posts that had nothing to do with marketing! Imagine that?

You could tell it was a marketer’s blog – ads on the sidebars, the word “marketing” somewhere in the title,…you could just tell. However, the first few posts were about a sports event, I think it was hockey and there was a post about his favorite band and so on.

And you what? It was refreshing.

So, lighten up!

I’ve got 30 minutes before Avatar: The Last Airbender comes on and in that time, I think I’ll water the plants.*

*Before publishing this post, I wrote the word planets instead of plants. I made a note because this may be something to consider later on.

And by the way, I bought the bubble blaster from one of the street vendors.
    Now there are bubbles everywhere!

    Hi Jules,

    Is fun isn’t it?

I mean seeing Marketing in everything. But do beware not to fall into the Mind Trap of…..well, Seeing Marketing In Everything.

Marketing in a sense is actually organizing product or service information in creative way to better communicate to the target audience.

Sometimes we get ourselves to deep into the “marketing” mentality that we forget about the Last Mile, a phrase more popular known in branding….that last mile is the referring to end user of our service and product.

In the end, is still about people.

I will be posting my piece on this subject( Imean the people part) in another 4-5hours. So perhaps we can continue our conversation there

One of my teacher we taught me Consumer Behavior once told me that some of the most brilliant marketing and advertising genius he knew were not Major in marketing, they are not even major in Business, they comes with a diverse backgrounds like Sociology, Arts and Psychology.

So focus on how you can create value to people and you are sure to find your “zone”.

Our product need not only to be in IM. But we sure can use what we learned in IM to create and promote almost anything.

    Cheers

    Hey Jason,

Thanks for the warning about seeing marketing in everything. It’s just phase, right?
I doubt I’ll still be awake when you post but I am looking forward to reading it later on.
See you back at your blog.

    Hi Jukes.

It is a phase, definitely. That’s what makes a marketing person different from others. Most people went into marketing for the fame and glory. For me, is the ability to see the “underlying truth” behind what something may appear (E.g. Commercial, PR campaign, even the way shopping center plan its floor plan) that really intrigue me.

I went through your phase before and love every moment of it. But I also went through the phase of letting go of the usual marketing mentality for a breakthrough for a marketing promotion for a theater performance back in my home land Singapore. We were desperate as all our ideas was either seen or heard elsewhere, and our performance was on a month that had a lot of competition around. Will the performance went well with a 80% booked tickets. Not a block buster, but at least the theater group did not loose money.

Anyway, enjoy your PHASE by all means. And looking forward for you to find your “ZONE” in IM. Talk later. :)

    Cheers

P/S:Mmm…as I come to think of it, perhaps I should shared my experience from that theater promotion at the Marketing Black Box section on my blog.

    Thanks for your comments.

I’m not into marketing for fame and glory either but I hear it pays well.

In IT, troubleshooting was what I did best. Everything I’ve heard so far in IM
has been: find the solution to a problem people have and give them the solution.

So for me, going from IT to IM is a surprisingly natural progression . I just have to make a few mental adjustments. :)

And you! 80% booked and no red ink? Wow! Congratulations. That’s not bad, not bad at all.

    Hey Jules,

Alex has created a monster ha ha.

I am exactly the same, I can’t look at anything without analyzing it and wondering how I could make it better.

    It’s a curse I tell ya!

But all the money we make will come in handy for sure.

  4. Hey Jules,

Glad that you have Alex Jeffreys as a mentor and joined his MWA 3.0 class.

I started with his MWA 2.0 class and am still learning but am now taking action.

I have sometimes not written a blog post for months which is a bit slack, but have started again now and glad that my recent post caught your eye.

I agree that you don’t always have to blog about your main topic.

Adding something else that interests you helps your readers know a bit more about you and that you are a real person and it may help build the relationship and trust which is so important in this business.

Also, if you can’t think of something to write about in your main topic, then writing a short post about something else of interest will help keep your blog alive in the eyes of Google. So this could be better than no post at all.

    Cheers,

    Hi Jules

It really doesn’t hurt to weave some real life stuff into your marketing material. Its a light relief sometimes.

As you say I think the Internet Potential in other Niches (outside the IM Niche) is huge. I think the IM niche itself is probably too crowded, but its worth staying in to keep abreast of inovations.

    Hey Peter,
You may be right about the IM niche being a little too crowded. And I think it’s that way because there are so many people with no alternate but it use the internet to generate income. So, there are going to be a lot of “newbies” like me coming down the pipe. But still, I’ve working the IM niche for 3 months and I’m a little fried at the moment – marketing and being marketing to.
So to relax, I started a garden on my balcony -something to contrast the steel and concrete of the city. Wouldn’t you know it? I found a niche. Now it’s time to put what I learned to the test.
Take to you soon and thanks for stopping by!

    Hi Jules.

My name is Ruth, I am a new student of Alex (MWA 4.0) I heard great stuff about past students, I hope soon I will feel that warm welcome in the community too.

I liked your post, it is so true about how hard it is to come up with a topic that we think will be of interest for the readers. this is a great idea, as Alex says, the main thing is to add value to whatever we post, so it is not bad once in a blue moon to publish a humorist post. Congratullations, great idea, thanks for sharing.
